Auckland-based Haruhiko (Haru) Sameshima was born in Japan and moved to New Zealand in 1973 while in his teens. Sameshima has been exploring the concept of 'New Zealand' for many years, looking at the &ldquo incongruous set of cultural mores&ldquo that make up our country.
His 1996 work The Shopping Mall As A Place Of Contemplation incorporated a series of television images and shopping mall
Eco-Tourism (images of which appear in his recent publication Bold Centuries) is not an investigation of ecotourism in the usual sense, but a study of the tourist industry and its relationship with the environment.
Sameshima continues to produce work from his central Auckland studio.
