Duncan Innes is a photographer who finds, celebrates and amplifies simplicity and beauty. A successful fashion, lifestyle, portrait and interior photographer and story-teller, his work is found in top magazines, books, fashion houses and galleries.
He is currently working on his third book, photographing New Zealand entrepreneurs in their working environment, to be published by Penguin Random House. The last book he completed was also for Penguin Random House and includes a collection of Waiheke Island's greatest characters, with words by John Hawkesby. This follows on from a collaborative work with author Simon Farrell-Green entitled Food Heroes: the story of artisanal food producers throughout New Zealand. The warmth and intelligence of Innes's photographs helped this become a standout of local publishing in 2012.
To have a Duncan Innes work is to have a moment of wonder, reflection and beauty, composed and kept forever. Innes's extensive travels and constantly roaming eye make the world his subject, but conversely it is the human moment and the intimate that he finds from so wide a subject. His interest in - and use of - light marks his practice out, as does his ability to find architectural and graphical moments in all manner of environments.
